The struggle

Why Most Bass Players Struggle With Funk

Here's the uncomfortable truth:
A lot of bassists sound lame when they try to play funk.

They are not funky.

They’ve learned a Flea riff. They’ve copied a Bootsy lick. They can play the notes.

But funk isn’t about just hitting the notes. That’s only a fraction of what it takes.

Without the pocket, the line has no weight.
Without the articulation, it sounds flat.
Without dynamics, it has no life.
Without harmonic awareness, it’s just random notes glued together.
Early enrollment bundle ($164 value)

Even outside funk — in rock, soul, R&B, gospel, pop — it's the same.

And when you try to write your own funk line? That’s where most bassists fall apart.

They’re stuck in ‘copy mode’. They don’t know the language of funk well enough to create. And when they do try, their lines sound stiff, awkward, and anything but funky.

The real problem? They skipped the very first step.

They jumped straight into licks and lines without ever building the pocket.

If you don’t have the pocket — nothing else works.

You can play the notes… but something still doesn’t feel right.

Here’s why:

Your riffs don’t groove. Your fills don’t land.
Your original lines never feel authentic.
Your timing feels off, even when the notes are correct.
You struggle to lock in with drums or other instruments.
Your bass lines sound stiff, flat, or uninspired.
Improvising feels awkward or forced.
Early enrollment bundle ($164 value)

Because until you truly build pocket, it will always feel and sound like something is missing — no matter how much you practice.

Definition

What is “the pocket”?

The pocket is the space where everything locks in.

Where your timing, feel, and tone line up so tightly with the drums that the groove almost plays itself.

It’s not just rhythm — it’s feel.

It’s the weight behind each note, the space between them, and the confidence to sit right where the music needs you.

That’s what separates “bassists who play funk” from bassists who are funky.
And it’s why every great player builds everything around it.

The Pocket First Framework

Pocket-First is a step-by-step system I’ve created from the ground up that starts with getting your rhythm and groove foundations right, first. This is not about memorizing riffs — it’s about learning the DNA of funk.

This unique approach to learning Funk enables you to:

Lock into the pocket like Rocco or Zender.
Bring your grooves to life by mastering the essential funk articulations.
Play the language of funk fluently, not just repeat phrases.
Create your own grooves that feel real, alive, and unmistakably yours.
Early enrollment bundle ($164 value)

When you start with the pocket, everything else clicks.

Your feel, your timing, your articulation — all of it starts to groove.
Not just in funk, but in everything you play.

Because once you own the pocket… you own the music.

Yes! I’m Ready to Funk
Why pocket-first

What Happens When You Put The Pocket First

Now imagine this — instead of struggling to copy riffs that never quite land, you sit down with your bass and the groove feels good.

Every note you play has weight, and just feels right.
Your ghost notes and articulations give the line bounce and life.
You know exactly how to outline harmony without ever losing the pocket.
You lock in with the drums effortlessly.
And when the jam starts, you’re not stuck in “copy mode” — you can create your own authentic funk lines on the spot.
Early enrollment bundle ($164 value)

That’s what happens when you develop pocket like every great bassist has.

Every great player — from Larry Graham, Bernard Edwards and Rocco Prestia to Flea and Joe Dart — sound different, but underneath it all share the same DNA — the same foundations that make every note they play feel undeniable.

That’s why I built the Funk Accelerator — a step-by-step program built on my Pocket First Framework, designed to help you develop that same foundation for yourself.

Once you own the pocket, everything else clicks.
And once you own the pocket… you own the music.

When you start with the pocket, everything else clicks.

Your feel, your timing, your articulation — all of it starts to groove.
Not just in funk, but in everything you play.

Yes! I’m Ready to Funk

Building pocket won't just make you a better funk player, it will transform your playing in every style.

Rock, soul, R&B, gospel, pop – Groove is groove. Once you own it, everything you play feels better, tighter, and more alive.

How Pocket Changes Everything — It's not all about Funk
Why pocket-first
Building pocket in a focused funk context is one of the most transferable skills a bassist can develop.

1. Groove is universal

The essence of funk — timing, subdivision, dynamic control, and feel — is the foundation of every groove-based style. Once you internalize pocket in funk, it instantly improves your playing in soul, R&B, rock, gospel, pop, and even jazz. The muscle memory and awareness you develop in funk make everything else “sit” better rhythmically.

2. You learn to listen differently

Funk trains your ear to lock with the drums — especially the kick and hi-hat. That heightened rhythmic sensitivity carries straight into other genres, where the ability to blend with the drummer (not just follow them) is what separates good players from great ones.

3. It builds time confidence

Pocket training strengthens your internal clock — so when tempos fluctuate, or songs push and pull, you stay grounded. That’s gold in live and studio settings across any genre.

4. Expression and articulation improve

Ghost notes, muting, micro-dynamics — all those subtle funk nuances give your playing a new level of control and feel. Even in styles that aren’t overtly funky, those same tools add depth and character.

5. You become more musical overall

Because the course builds groove from the ground up, you’re not just memorizing funk lines — you’re learning how rhythm, harmony, and phrasing interact. That understanding feeds directly into songwriting, arranging, and improvisation.

Once you own the pocket, you don’t just play better funk — you play better music, full stop.

What Makes This Course So Different?

Most bass lessons start with licks.
Cool ideas, fun to play — but they skip the most important part: the pocket.
That’s why players dabble… and never really get it. And nothing really grooves.

The Funk Accelerator is different.

It’s a step-by-step program that starts in the pocket.

Every lesson builds your groove from the ground up and follows a clear sequence, designed to remove the guess work and teach you the language of funk. You always know exactly what to do next, and why.

Most funk lessons are licks in search of a groove.
This is groove in search of your voice.

By building real, transferable skills, this program doesn't just make you a better funk player — it makes you a better bassist.

  • Funk Gear Deep Dive – Basses, amps, EQs, strings, and setups that bring out your best funk tone.
  • The Pocket First Framework – Learn the system that defines every great funk bassist.
  • Essential Funk Rudiments (60+ min workshop) – Groove through a full rhythm workout designed to sharpen your timing, subdivision, and pocket awareness.

  • Funk Techniques: Articulation Mastery – Slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs, stings, and trills — learn how to make your lines talk and breathe through exclusive bass lines crafted in the style of the funk masters.
  • Funk Techniques: Ghost Notes – Build the percussive heartbeat of funk with hands-on grooves inspired by legends like Larry Graham and Flea.
  • Funk Techniques: Left-Hand Muting & Skip – Master control of silence and syncopation through original groove studies designed to hard-wire your feel.
  • Part 1 Wrap-Up – Put it all together in a performance-ready line that cements your pocket and feel for good.
Part 2

Harmony, Shapes & Tones

Add colour, movement, and personality to every groove.

Now that your rhythm and pocket are dialed in, it’s time to bring the music into your funk — learning how notes, intervals, and tonal choices make your lines sing.

  • The Funk Skeleton: Root, 5th, 7th & Octave
Build the essential framework every funk line is built on — then bring it to life through original studies:

    • Study 1: “Stinger” – One-chord funk fire built from pure pocket.
    • Study 2: “Whipper Snapper” – Two-chord movement with attitude and bounce.
    • Study 3: “The Cardiff” – A slick groove that lands off the 1 to test your timing and control.
  • Chord Tones in the Pocket
Add sophistication and spice without losing the groove. We’ll explore major 3rds, minor 3rds, and the ever-funky 9th — learning the shapes, then applying them through playable, stage-ready studies:

    • Study 1: “Walk Up” – Major-3rd flavour that sounds like instant feel-good funk.
    • Study 2: “The Minor Whiner” – Minor-blues tension and release.
    • Study 3: “Slinky Vibes” – Smooth minor-9th textures with that neo-soul slickness.
    • Study 4: “Jaco Funkness” – Major-6th shapes with melodic flair.

  • Scales for Funk Colours
Funk doesn’t live in scales — it borrows from them. Learn how to use small fragments of the minor and major pentatonic, Dorian, and Mixolydian modes to build modern, melodic bass lines.

    • Study 1: “Boogie On Reggae Fella” – Major-pentatonic energy.
    • Study 2: “Big Hat” – Gritty minor-pentatonic groove.
    • Study 3: “Bad Times” – Dorian-flavoured pocket line with attitude.
    • Study 4: “Rock Your Body” – Mixolydian smoothness meets dance-floor bounce.

  • Chord Tones with Chromatics
The secret sauce of great funk lines — connecting chord tones with approach notes and passing tones for that slippery, syncopated feel.

    • Study 1: “Chromatic Time” – tight and playful.
    • Study 2: “Slow Chic” – 5th-based groove with a nod to Bernard Edwards.
    • Study 3: “Step Down 7” – Chromatic walkdowns built on 7ths.
    • Study 4: “Mind That 4th” – A funky 4th-based workout that challenges your precision and phrasing.

Part 2 Wrap-Up – Looking at everything you’ve learned so far, and getting ready for the next step!

Part 3

The Vocabulary of the Greats

Decode the DNA of the world’s most legendary funk bassists.

Now that you’ve got the pocket, harmony, and tone foundations in place, it’s time to step inside the minds (and grooves) of the masters who defined funk — and learn to speak their musical language for yourself.

Each legendary player gets their own two-section study piece — with full breakdowns, stylistic analysis, and the “Me-Now-You” format: I play the groove for 8 bars, then you take over. We trade back and forth to build your feel, stamina, and creative instinct — just like a jam session with the greats.

  • Larry Graham – The Slap Funk Engine
The man who started it all. Learn how Larry’s explosive thumb and popping hand revolutionized bass forever. We’ll explore his attack, tone setup, and rhythmic phrasing — then lock it in with a slap-driven A/B study that captures the fire of “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again).”
  • Rocco Prestia – 16th-Note Precision
Tight, relentless, and grooving for days. You’ll dissect Rocco’s ghost-note control, left-hand muting, and machine-like endurance through a syncopated fingerstyle study that channels Tower of Power energy straight into your hands.
  • Bernard Edwards – Chic Mechanics
From disco to deep funk, Bernard defined pocket perfection. This study digs into octave shapes, muted stabs, and the pumping right-hand technique that made hits like “Good Times” and “Le Freak” timeless.
  • Paul Jackson – Jazz-Funk Fusion
The thinking bassist’s funk hero. We’ll uncover Paul’s signature phrasing, chromatic approach lines, and outside note choices — all inside a two-part study that fuses syncopation and harmonic sophistication.
  • Stuart Zender – The Modernizer
Discover how Zender brought 70s-style funk into the modern era with Jamiroquai. You’ll explore his fluid lines, chordal embellishments, and lyrical phrasing — blending Rocco-style articulation with melodic, neo-soul flavour.
  • Joe Dart – Precision & Personality
Minimal notes, maximum impact. Learn how Joe crafts instantly recognizable lines with dynamics, economy, and pure energy — then groove along to a study that teaches his “less is more” philosophy in real time.
  • Flea – Funk’s Wild Child
The high-energy hybrid of slap, rock, and groove. We’ll break down Flea’s approach to phrasing, time feel, and melodic aggression — before diving into a two-part study that captures his signature mix of chaos and control.
Part 4

Application: Your Funk Voice

Turn everything you’ve learned into your own signature groove.

This is where the training wheels come off. In Part 4, you’ll take the concepts, shapes, and vocabulary you’ve built and apply them to 12 original backing tracks — each written and produced exclusively for this program in the styles of Jamiroquai, James Brown, Vulfpeck, Chic, Tower of Power and more.

Each track features:

  • Two sections (A & B) to stretch your creativity and feel.
  • Video assignment & breakdown from me — I’ll walk you through the challenge, set the guardrails, and show you exactly what to focus on.
  • Clear creative parameters that evolve with every track — so you’re never guessing what to work on, but always pushing your limits.

You’ll start simple — building bass lines using only The Funk Skeleton.

Then, as we move forward, I’ll gradually add layers: chromatic approaches, syncopated phrasing, slap variations, and advanced articulation.

By the end of these 12 assignments, you’ll have:

✅ A complete portfolio of your own funk bass lines
✅ The confidence to craft grooves from scratch in any style
✅ Your own authentic funk voice — built from the same DNA as the greats.

“I’m 68 and honestly thought slap bass was a young person’s game. But the way this course breaks everything down made it totally doable. I’m having so much fun rediscovering my bass playing—and my hands don’t hate me either lol!”

“I’ve tried learning slap from YouTube for years but always gave up. The Slap Accelerator finally gave me a structure that made sense—and kept me coming back. It’s not about playing fast, it’s about playing well. This nailed it.”

“LifeChanger! After struggling for years to understand how to practice and what to practice I now have focus and direction. It's been big AhHa moment after moment, a mind-blowing, opening, and expansive experience. I've already experienced huge growth in bass and as a musician as result from your guidance and this is just the beginning. ”

FAQs

Will this work if I’m self-taught?

100%. In fact, most of our students are self-taught. The Pocket First Framework gives you the structure and roadmap you may have been missing — so you’re not just jamming aimlessly, but actually making consistent progress.

I’m not an advanced player — will this work for me?

Absolutely! The Funk Accelerator is designed to meet you where you are. Part 1 starts with pocket fundamentals — rhythm, ghost notes, articulation — so even if you’re newer to funk, you’ll build a rock-solid foundation before moving on. And if you’re more experienced, you’ll still be challenged as you apply these skills in the Groove Lab and style studies.

What if I’m just starting out?

The program isn’t for absolute beginners picking up the bass for the first time — but if you’ve got the basics down, this will fast-track your funk playing like nothing else.If you can play a few basic grooves and move comfortably around the fretboard, you’ll be fine.

What if I already know some theory and scales — will I still learn something new?

Yes. This isn’t just about theory — it’s about how to actually use harmony inside funk. Even if you already know scales and chord tones, the Pocket First Framework shows you how to make them groove. Plus, the Vocabulary of the Greats module will open up ideas you won’t find in any theory book.

How much time do I need each week?

You don’t need hours a day. Most students see incredible results with 3-4 focused practice sessions per week. I recommend anywhere from 20-40 mins per session. Also, the guided practice sessions and assignments are designed to fit into a busy schedule while still giving you steady progress.

Do I need special gear to take this course?

Nope. All you need is your bass and a way to play the lessons (phone, tablet, or computer). A pair of headphones and a practice amp will make the play-alongs more fun, but there’s no special gear required.

How is this different from the lessons on YouTube?

Great question. YouTube can give you random tips or licks, but it won’t give you a step-by-step system. The Funk Accelerator is structured so that every module builds on the last, taking you from pocket foundations to creating your own funk lines. It’s not about collecting riffs — it’s about transformation.

How is this different from private lessons?

Private lessons can be great — but they depend on the teacher, and most don’t follow a structured curriculum for funk.

With the Funk Accelerator, you’re following a proven framework that takes you step-by-step through everything you need — plus you get tabs, play-alongs, guided practice sessions, and lifetime access.

It’s like having a world-class funk teacher in your pocket, whenever you need them.

What if I fall behind?

No stress. You get lifetime access to the lessons, so you can go at your own pace. The guided practice sessions will keep you moving forward, but even if life gets in the way, the course will be waiting when you’re ready.

What happens if I can’t make some of the guided practice sessions?

Don’t worry — every guided practice session is recorded and uploaded for you to watch on your own schedule. You’ll never miss out, and you can rewatch sessions as often as you like.

Is this course just about slap bass?

Not at all. Slap is part of funk’s history, but the Funk Accelerator covers the whole DNA of funk: fingerstyle grooves, ghost notes, muting, harmonic approaches, and style studies from Rocco Prestia to Joe Dart. You’ll learn to slap too, but this isn’t just a slap course — it’s the complete funk language.

How do I get a refund if I change my mind?

It’s super simple. Just send us a quick email within 30 days of purchase and we’ll refund you in full — no questions asked, no hoops to jump through. You’ll be fully refunded within 24hrs.

What if I join and it’s not for me?

That’s exactly why we have the 30-day, no-questions-asked guarantee. Jump in, try the Pocket First Framework, join the practice sessions, and jam with the play-alongs. If you don’t feel a real change in your groove, just let us know and you’ll get a full refund. No hassle.

Final Word

Funk isn’t about playing more notes.

It’s about feel. Groove. Pocket.

Once you get that, everything changes — your lines come alive, the band locks in, and you finally sound like the player you’ve always wanted to be.

That’s what the Funk Accelerator gives you: the DNA of funk, step by step, until it’s second nature.

So if you’re ready to stop copying and start creating — now’s the time.

See you inside!
